Crossing Guazhou

To the Tune of Narcissus

Zhao Shanqing

渚莲花脱锦衣收，

风蓼青雕红穗秋。

堤柳绿灭长条瘦，

系行人来去愁，

别离情今古悠悠。

南徐城下，

西津渡口，

北固山头。

Withering are lotus flowers and their beauty by the river islet,

Fading is knotweed in wind and its ears redden the autumn tint.

Willow tints of green are fading and twigs slender,

Mingled with the sorrow of the heart-broken traveler,

A tearful parting from the lover is haunting forever.

At the gate of Nanxu, (1)

At the Ferry of Xijin, (2)

At the top of Beigu Mountain. (3)

(1)Nanxu is another name for today’s Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province.

(2)Xijin is a ferry on the north of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province.

(3)Beigu Mountain is a mountain protruding into the Yangtze River on the north of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province.
